Cosplayers Assemble! ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ cosplay from around Instagram

Avengers: Infinity War is only a week away. Along with the rest of the comic book community our team is incredibly excited for the film’s release. We aren’t the only ones who’re excited though. The cosplayers of the world are putting together some simply incredible Infinity War costumes and we wanted to share some of the best that we found on Instagram.

Instagram Photo

I really don’t want Tony Stark to die in Infinity War, but he’s my best guess. Either way at least he’ll go out looking fly as hell. Oh and make sure to check out Comicare. It’s a fantastic charity that visits hospitalized children as super heroes and gifts them comic books!

Instagram Photo

Black Star? Check. Beard? Check. Wakandan shields? Check. Watch out Thanos, you’re going to get the worst hand tickling of all time.

Instagram Photo

I can’t wait to see Thor interact with the Guardians, specifically Drax. I feel like they’re going to get along great and drink lots of beer. I’d love to know how spending a day with an eyepatch on affects your depth perception.

Instagram Photo

Look everyone! Natasha and Dr. Banner finally got together. Now on to more important things, will Loki and Thor have scenes together in Infinity War?

Instagram Photo

I prefer OMGcosplay to Scarlett Johansson and I don’t care who knows it. But seriously since Cap is getting a neat Wakanda shield I hope Shuri hooks up Black Widow with some cool gadgets.

Instagram Photo

He’s definitely clenching. I think he’s clenching. Legolas are you clenching? Hawkeye is going to be Thanos’ kryptonite. I’m calling it now.

Instagram Photo

Robophiliacs are people too. Is Wanda going to go House of M on everyone in Infinity War so she can have robot babies? The world waits with bated breath.

Instagram Photo

Vision has been so well done and Paul Bethany is killing it. What’s going to happen to him when a member of the Black Order pulls an intrinsic component of Vision’s bioorganic physiology off his head? Hopefully he doesn’t turn into a vegetable and/or die. Guess we’ll see!

Sound off in the comments and let us know what you think the ultimate fate of each Avenger will be.

“I fall asleep a lot in weird places”: Cosplayer Purrblind talks Lolita fashion, Zelda and Cosplay

$

Recently I had the opportunity to speak with the incredibly talented Toronto based cosplayer Purrblind. Oh man did we have a great time nerding out together over our shared passions and connecting over how hard it is to be a nerd growing up. Not only is this lovely lady a fellow Zelda super fan, but she also educated me on Lolita fashion and it’s origins as a Japanese feminist movement. Don’t let her sweet and innocent looks fool you though, there’s a dark and twisted person under all the smiles! Check out my interview below for the full story.

AiPT!: Tell us about where you’re from and how you like to spend your time when you aren’t cosplaying.

PB: I’m from Toronto Canada. When I’m not cosplaying I generally play a lot of video games, as I also stream on Twitch. I love Japanese fashion, especially Lolita fashion and some other sub-styles. I’ve been gaming and watching anime since I was a little kid, so it’s fair to say that my interests are pretty nerdy across the board.

AiPT!: Could you tell me a little more about Lolita fashion? I’ve heard it mentioned before, but I’ve never taken the time to learn about it.

PB: Basically it’s based off of Victorian and/or Rococo fashion, but it’s morphed a lot over time. It started as a feminist statement in Japan. Japanese culture is based around a strict structure of getting married, having children and being a good wife. So some women said “What if I don’t want to get married, have children and be a good wife? What if I just want to life my life for myself?”. So these women purposely dressed up in these outrageous outfits to essentially deter people [laughs]. Which is what really drew me to it, I love being able to wear something on the outside that expresses what’s on the inside.

AiPT!: What was your first exposure to the cosplay culture and community?

PB: I got into it because of my best friend, who was into cosplay when we were 12-13. She showed up to school on Halloween dressed in cosplay as Black Rock Shooter and I had no idea what is was. So she explained to me that it was cosplay and exposed me to FanExpo in Toronto, which is essentially your run of the mill comic con. I thought it was all very cool but I was bullied a lot in school so I didn’t get into it until several years later in about grade 10.

So she took me to a local comic con and I had a little costume we put together. I remember just walking in and having these feelings about how I had been so closeted with my interests because I was so scared to be out there from bullying. Kids were so harsh over liking Harry Potter, I wasn’t about to go out there and say I liked anime. So walking in I met so many people that were legitimately interested in what I was interested in and I immediately knew that I had to go to as many of these conventions as I could. I’ve been cosplaying ever since.

AiPT!: I’ve always found the personas that cosplayers create for themselves rather fascinating. Could you tell us about where “Purrblind” came from and how you decided it was the right fit for you?

PB: I’ve been wearing glasses since I was two-years old because I have a lazy eye. I used to wear an eye patch as well for eye patch therapy. It’s always something that people have noticed about me “Wow I love your glasses they make your eyes look so big!”. But it was also the first thing people would bully me about. I was super self conscious about it for a really long time, so I tried to think of something that I could do to make myself more okay with that aspect of myself.

I kind of just took the thing that I had the biggest insecurities about and dove into a thesaurus looking for synonyms for obscured vision [laughs]. I wanted it to sound cool and edgy, I came up with this handle when I was 16 and I thought to myself “I want to sound deep!” [laughs]. So I came across purblind with one r and that it was really cool. I added the extra the r to differentiate myself from the actual word, I thought it was really cute and wouldn’t doesn’t like cat girls?

AiPT!: Out of all the characters you’ve cosplayed as, which one do you feel you align the most with?

PB: The first that comes to mind is definitely Madoka from Madoka Magica. I’ve cosplayed three of her outfits and I’ve since improved upon the existing costumes. I love the show so much because it’s so beautiful and I love things that are beautiful when you look at them but really dark and fucked up underneath [laughs].

In the series Madoka suffers so much and she couldn’t see how incredible she was for being able to go through so much. That really spoke to me on a personal level because of some past traumas I’ve been through where I didn’t think very much of myself at the time, but since overcoming that stuff I’ve felt really empowered. Madoka really helped me with getting to that good place.

AiPT!: Is cosplay a pure hobby and outlet for your passion, or is it something you look at as a path to a career?

PB: Honestly it started purely as me expressing myself and having fun. At the end of the day that’s always going to be the main reason that I do it. If I don’t have fun anymore, I’m not going to do it anymore. I’ll find something else. But I still as much, if not more fun now than when I first started cosplaying.

It’s really cool that I’ve been able to start sustaining my own projects through Patreon and other avenues. I’d love to able to continue on this route. I’ll always do cosplay for just a fun hobby, but I won’t do it as a business if it ever stops being fun.

AiPT!: What’s a weird quirk or habit that you have that your fans may not be aware of?

PB: Oh man. There’s a lot of them [laughs]. I fall asleep a lot in weird places. I have a fatigue illness, so I can’t really avoid it and a lot of people don’t know that. It’s minor but it impacts me. I’ll fall asleep on my floor, the subway and really anywhere [laughs].

I come off as really shy and innocent because I’m such an introvert. So my friends who know me well laugh when people comment on my demeanor when they first meet me. They know they’ll come to regret calling me shy and innocent [laughs]. I have a tendency not to shut up and say the most vulgar things imaginable [laughs].

AiPT!: I know from your social media pages that you’re playing Breath of the Wild right now. Is that your first foray into Zelda games or do you have another that’s your favorite?

PB: I’ve played a lot of Zelda games. My first was Ocarina of Time and it’s my favorite Zelda game.

AiPT!: Good answer! That’s the best one.

PB: I got the game totally by chance. My mother’s coworker got a Wii so he decided to give his Gamecube away to her and he had said he wanted to keep his copy of Ocarina of Time. But when I got my hands on the Gamecube it had Ocarina of Time in it and he let me keep it since I was playing it so much. I basically lost my mind [laughs].

AiPT!: What are you most looking forward to this year?

PB: Currently I’m excited for Colossalcon in June. All my friends are in that area, I went last year and it was amazing. I love water parks and parties.

I’m really nervous and also really excited that I might get to go to AnimeExpo this year. I was supposed to go last year but it just didn’t work out. This year I have a bunch of friends that want me to come and a place to stay. It’ll be exciting if, fingers crossed, it works out this year.

Not your typical cosplayer: An interview with Missy Mayhem

$
0
0

There were so many awesome booths at the recent El Paso Comic Con that despite spending hours there each day, I could not help but feel I had missed a lot once I left. One booth that I did not overlook was that of cosplayer Missy Mayhem. After all it’s not every day that you meet a cosplayer who also happens to be a professional wrestler.

Instagram Photo

AiPT!: Tell us a little about yourself; Where are you from and how did you get into cosplay?

M.M: I’m originally from Corpus Christi, TX over by the Gulf of Mexico, I moved to San Antonio, TX for a short time and finally I now live in Atlanta, GA! I found cosplay by finding a local anime convention in my area, did my research and realized people were dressing up as their favorite characters to these things! I went to the local costume shop and dropped $20 on a gothic lolita costume and went as a lolita vampire! While I was there I learned that people could actually make their costumes, so down the rabbit hole I went!

Instagram Photo

AiPT!: When was your first con and what was it like?

M.M: My first con was something else compared to what we have nowadays. imagine 2007 (over 10 years ago), few people in costume, Yaya Han herself was “up and coming”, people were still playing “the game” (you know) There actually wasn’t a lot of nightlife associated with the convention and also a lot more japanese culture panels instead of cosplay panels. I really do enjoy what our community has done to the convention scene, it was pretty uptight until cosplay came around.

Instagram Photo

AiPT!: Along with being a cosplayer and a model you’re also a professional wrestler in training. How long have you been into pro wrestling and what made you decide to make the transition from fan to performer?

M.M: I’ve been watching for a while and I just kind of fell in love with it very quickly. Last year I had been thinking about doing it but didn’t know if I could commit but something just switched in me and I told myself, “I’d rather spend my life knowing than not knowing!”. The art of wrestling is truly something to be admired. I love training in the gym but more importantly, I want to learn how to perform, improv and think on my feet. I’m naturally a shy, nice person, so I want to use wrestling to teach me how to be more aggressive and become a stronger version of myself!

Instagram Photo

AiPT!: Who’s your favorite wrestler?

M.M.: I love Jericho but I can’t help but enjoy the work of Kevin Owens too, not to mention Shawn Michaels! Too many to choose from, but a current favorite of mine is Toni Storm who’s working in Japan right now.

Instagram Photo

AiPT!: You attend conventions, have to train, and somehow find time for your personal life. How are you able to juggle everything you have going on?

M.M.: I’m still having trouble adjusting and I’m 3 months into my training. I just take it one day at a time, plan out my week best I can but also know that not everything will go my way.

Instagram Photo

AiPT!: I assume you want to make a career out of either modeling or wrestling. Which would you prefer or do you want to do something else entirely?

M.M.: I want to be a wrestler for sure. I’m already a working full-time model/cosplayer so I’ve “made it” in that sense. Every time I go to training and get in the ring I just have so much fun! Modeling can feel like work sometimes but with wrestling it’s not like that. Eventually however, I’d like to use my knowledge in branding/marketing in some sort of corporate setting, but I’m young right now so I’m gonna do young people stuff like chase dreams and realize them!

Instagram Photo

AiPT!: In today’s multimedia world, cosplay is more prevalent than ever. There’s access to more mediums and it’s easier to get your costumes out for the world to see. What separates you from other cosplayers?

M.M.: I feel like what separates me and it’s especially something you may not know until you meet me in person, is that I have a belief that each and every one of us nerds deserves love, respect, and I try my very best to provide that. We all have our struggles and I believe when you walk through that door, you should be able to forget about all the bad and enjoy the good, at least for that weekend.

Instagram Photo

AiPT!: Social media is extremely important nowadays and a great way of getting your work out to the public. Unfortunately, there are a lot of negatives. How do you deal with downside of navigating social media?

M.M.: I do my best to post as often as I can with good content, in hopes that at least a percentage of my fans will get at least one post. Right now because of the restrictions that FB/IG are putting on their page reach, I’m committing time to work on my YouTube channel in hopes I can reach more people that way.

Instagram Photo

AiPT!: How did you come up your cosplay name?

M.M.: My fiance and I were trying to think of wrestling names and BOOM there it was! Missy Mayhem!

Instagram Photo

AiPT!: What is something that people would be surprised to learn about you?

M.M.: I’m not sure, I’m quite an open book. I have a twin brother…Kevin Owens blocked me on twitter…I really enjoy macaroons.

Instagram Photo

AiPT!: Are there any upcoming projects/conventions you would like to promote?

M.M.: SURE, You can find me at my next couple of shows;
Kameha-con – Irving, TX – May 4-6
Momo-con – Atlanta, GA – May 24-27
Comic Con Palm Springs – Aug 24-26

Right now I’m working on some cosplays for all of those events including:

Here at AiPT! we have a serious Star Wars obsession — like, super duper serious. We spent the entire month of December talking about Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and with Solo: A Star Wars Story coming out May 25th, we decided to do it all over again. For the next month AiPT! will be flooded with Star Wars YouTube videos, podcasts, cosplay, comic reviews, novel reviews, and hell, maybe we’ll even dive back into the dreaded holiday special from the ’70s.

Donald Glover doesn’t just look the part of Lando Calrissian, he makes you believe he’s Lando Calrissian. I’ve avoided spoilers for Solo: A Star Wars Story to the best of my ability, but the one thing I keep hearing is how Glover absolutely owned the role. But he’s not the only person out there who looks and acts the part of our favorite Star Wars characters.

To celebrate the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story I’ve gathered a collection of some of the best Star Wars cosplayers from across Instagram, playing characters that interact with Han Solo during his adventures across the galaxy.

MomoCon 2018 Preview: Atlanta’s homegrown pop culture convention celebrates super hero-style!

MomoCon in Atlanta Georgia : Animation, Gaming, Anime, and Comic Convention

When discussing major fan and pop culture conventions, Atlanta is known best for its annual Labor Day convention, DragonCon. Swiftly gaining on the big daddy, is MomoCon. Now in its 14th year, attendees celebrate fandom, anime, gaming, and cosplay in the Georgia World Congress Center.  Expecting over 33,000 attendees, MomoCon has grown into one of the nation’s largest conventions, with a quickly growing fanbase thanks to it’s family-friendly environment and dedication to everything awesome in fandom.

Started in 2005 as an outreach of the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) Anime Club, MomoCon has grown exponentially in the ensuing years, testing the limits of what a local convention can be in both size and scope.  While cosplay and anime are at the heart of MomoCon, the expansion of the convention has allowed it to grow in multiple areas, including a massive gaming area with developer exhibits and arcade games from around the world.

The true gem of MomoCon has always been its attendees’ intense devotion to cosplay.  Born from its anime roots, the cosplay is dedicated and delightful, ranging from simple Naruto headbands to intense, screen-ready costumes that would wow at any major convention in the country.  Professional cosplayers from around the nation and beyond descend on MomoCon to show off their latest creations and learn from each other at some of the hundreds of panels and guest lectures taking place over the four-day event.

If the future of Atlanta conventions is in MomoCon’s hands, the future is bright indeed.  Join us here at AiPT for coverage of this weekend’s events, including an exclusive interview with the Senior Director of Analog Gaming and cosplay pics galore.

Greetings to all from the Peach State and the Peach Con! (Momo is Japanese for Peaches)  On Saturday, I spent the day wandering the massive halls, small nooks, and intriguing crannies of the Georgia World Congress Center and have brought you my favorite cosplay from the day.  MomoCon has been known for its intense devotion to anime cosplay, but many other comic, gaming, and pop culture costumes always make the weekend interesting. Disclaimer before we get to the pics: I’m old and don’t know much about specific anime properties, so some of my identification may be off or missing entirely.  I also probably missed a great deal of really well done costumes of characters I just don’t recognize. MomoCon 2018: Recap and Thoughts

$

0

As Americans join together to grill outdoors and open the summer swimming season, we come to the end of another MomoCon!  If you missed my preview article, MomoCon is an Atlanta-born convention focused on the family-friendly side of anime, gaming, comics, and pop culture.  This year’s convention was held at the Georgia World Congress Center and boasted the largest gaming area of the con’s existence. Here’s what I caught in my time wandering the packed halls of MomoCon 2018.

Gaming: This year, MomoCon dedicated an entire exhibit hall to it’s analog and digital gaming areas.  The games ran nearly 24 hrs day for the convention; featuring streaming tournaments, rows of LAN party-style PCs, arcade cabinets from around the world, and a board game library that was the envy of all who beheld it.  While the lines for the fully immersive Gundam Mech pods were always packed, I did get to play I game I can’t believe exists: Cho Chabudai Gaeshi, or, Super Table Flip!

Seek this game out.  With amazing Japanese imports provided by Tokyo Attack and classic American cabinets and pinball machines from Player One Arcades, the electronic gaming area was packed.  DreamHack provided over 100 Free-to-play PCs along with consoles galore. Crowd-watching people in line for a Dance-Dance style game that tracked your actual body movements rather than just your feet was another highlight for me personally.  A line of 50 people all doing the same moves to practice for their turn on stage was just pure joy.

The board gaming area was packed as well, providing not only a massive play library, but also a chance for busy congoers to take a bit of a break and game with friends and PUGs.  I got a few board games in, including Black Orchestra, Sushi Go!, and Stockpile. In addition to the library, game publishers donated games for a play-to-win batch. If you played a specific game, you entered a raffle for that game.

Publishers were also represented in both the exhibit and gaming halls, showing off prototype and near-production games, both analog and digital.  I’ll have a separate article detailing some of those games coming up.

Cosplay: With its roots fully vested in anime, MomoCon has always been a cosplay haven.  Unlike its big brother, DragonCon, most of the cosplay at Momo is single-topic and focused on fandom.  While there weren’t a lot of clever costume mash-ups, there were some fantastic versions of anime, cartoon, comics, and other pop culture costumes.  The favorites I came across were a Back to the Future II duo and a truly fantastic Lotor.  Check out my article detailing cosplay with pics I took over the weekend.

Exhibit Hall: The MomoCon Exhibit Hall is as big as many other conventions of its size, but with the anime start to the con and the younger crowd, many Japanese culture vendors were on site.  There was booth after booth of various plushy things and mystery bags holding various combinations of toys, snacks, and other goodies. K-Pop bands and Pop Vinyls were also exceedingly popular (heh), with the ubiquitous toys populating seemingly every other booth.

The artist’s alley at MomoCon was also quite large with indie comic artists and writers mixed up with well-established comic and anime artists.  There were several other interesting booths, including one who made art from pressed paper. Around the edges of the hall were a row of prop/cosplay makers, including several local to Atlanta.  With the film industry now so ingrained in Georgia, it makes sense that Hollywood-level prop design would set up shop as well. With screen-ready replicas of various movie props, as well as cosplay accessories, the con could be a one-stop shop for many amateur cosplayers looking to improve their game.

One of the highlights of the convention is the collection of replica cars and other vehicles brought in by different dedicated groups.  From a Fallout-themed camper van to a replica 1966 Batmobile, these are high-quality replicas that always get a great reaction from the crowd.

Atmosphere: MomoCon has always been a family-friendly, open environment, allowing congoers to really embrace their inner nerd and whatever that means in their particular situation.  There were a huge number of young people in attendance and the diversity of the convention, in terms of race, age, and identity are tributes to both MomoCon’s openness and the appeal of having a place to feel comfortable as one’s honest self.  Lines were long, but never pushy. The gaming area is open to the whole convention and people were constantly sitting down for pick-up games, no matter who they were. The welcoming atmosphere of such a massive convention is a testament to the hard work and dedication the staff has created.

If you’re anywhere in the Southeast US next Memorial Day, consider checking out MomoCon.  In the next 5 years, this con will be talked about as one of the premiere gaming and pop culture conventions in the country, perfectly beginning summer in Atlanta.

LibsCosplay claims, “Reinhardt is the first massive costume I made… and I can tell you that it won’t be the last 😉 “Bring! It! On! I LIVE for this!”

After the way this impressive and true-to-form (it’s over 6 and a half feet tall!) Reinhardt turned out, we’re looking forward to Libs’ next offering and then some. Precision German cosplaying.
