NYCC 2017: Cosplay Armor & Props panel

Whether you’re new to cosplay or a grizzled old veteran, there’s always an opportunity to learn something new. I dropped in to New York Comic Con’s Cosplay Armor & Props panel to find out what some of the best cosplayers in the industry are doing today. All-star cosplayers Lua Stardust, Joanna Mari, Hooked on Phoenix, Becka Noel, Spectra and Dhareza Cosplayza led an insightful and fun discussion. I learned some of their favorite tips and tricks for building, painting, and storing cosplay, as well their preferred materials and tools for the job.

Building a body dummy

Becka – Wrap yourself in saran wrap so your skin can breathe, have a partner duct tape you. After an hour and sweating profusely, you have a nice second skin you can cut off and stuff with newspaper to use as a mannequin.

Joanna – I do the exact same thing. Make sure you have a partner to cut you out of there, otherwise it’s not a good time.

Lua – A bra underneath is really helpful to maintaining breast shape.

Becka – Anytime you’re making a pattern of your own body, you really want to use tight clothing to ensure the shape is accurate to your body.

Dhareza – Cardstock and craft paper is a great method to draw patterns on yourself and see what they’ll look like beforehand.

Spectra – I think this is a good method as well. My roommates aren’t confident of me using duct tape and scissors on myself. My personal preference is card stock over duct tape.

Hooked – I prefer duct tape, but be careful, I’ve lost several articles of clothing with this method.

Construction phase

Dhareza put together an informative and hilarious video on the construction phase of building a body dummy and some great tips & tricks

Spectra – I love working with Eva Foam. My roommates hate it because it’s everywhere in my apartment. I’ve been using Eva Foam for so long, that I’m used to it and comfortable with it, which is why I use it over Worbla.

Becka – I love working with Worbla because it’s a very forgiving material. You can use 100% of the material, there’s no waste. You can use all of the scraps to create little details. It has an adhesive that’s worked into the material so you don’t have to use glue with it. One of the things that’s really nice about it is the longevity. In five years my armor will look the same as it does now, whereas Eva Foam won’t last as long or hold up as well. I also find Worbla more form fitting to the female form.

Dhareza – The same tools you use when working with Worbla are used when working with Eva Foam, but the effect the tools have on the material is very different.

Joanna – One of the biggest reasons I love Worbla is it’s so versatile. My Wonder Woman breastplate was molded over a mannequin and I took a lot of tools to it to get the right shape. The scraps can be used to create almost anything. With Eva Foam scraps you can’t do that.

Lua – I used Worbla to make a little shop of horrors plant. There’s a ton of small details like teeth, vines, and leaves and it was made almost entirely from Worbla scraps.

Painting phase

Joanna – I like to prime my Worbla before painting, it helps the paint to adhere and gives it a better surface. I’m a big fan of decard paint, it has a great texture and color to it.

Lua – For painting my props I use a lot of basic acrylic paint. I want it to look basic and messy, not metallic.

Dhareza – Spectra How did you get the pieces to stay on?

Spectra – A lot of pieces had straps to keep them in place. The entire armor is actually waterproof. I used a combination of hot glue and elastics sewed to vinyl to attach the straps.

Dhareza – There’s a lot of techniques to keep your armor pieces on you. Some people glue the pieces onto spandex suits, but that can be really messy. I’m a big fan of using buckles and rivets to secure my armor pieces with Chicago screws.

Becka – The first costume I made with Worbla I glued elastic bands to the back of Worbla to keep the pieces on me. After that, I started to punch a hole in my armor, put the elastic through the hole, glue it to the back of the Worbla and then glue another piece of Worbla over that so it’s fully adhered.

Joanna – It’s a fabric, po-fur. It’s from a store called fabric empire. The easiest way to attach it was hot glue. I made this two years ago and it takes a lot of tugging to get it off. There are probably other ways of attaching it, but I found this method really easy to use.

Last step before you get to comic con

Joanna – Step one is trying it on. I’ve made a costume before and didn’t try it on before arriving and when I did everything broke apart. I needed a lot of help getting it back together. So now I always ensure everything looks good and fits properly before the day of the con.

Q&A with the audience

For a person who wants to get into cosplay, what site would you recommend going to for supplies?

Hooked – Cosplaysupplies.com

Lua – Amazon and a general hardware store.

Spectra – T&T Cosplay supplies

Becka – If you’re based in or around New York area, that’s a place called Manhattan wardrobe supply. They just opened a new cosplay section in their store, they sell tons of supplies and I’m working with them to get classes going for using Eva Foam and Worbla.

What do you use for primers with armor before painting?

Joanna – Several different options depending on the material. A lot of people use plasteda with Eva Foam.

Becka – With Worbla you’re looking for something that’s very flexible. Anything that has a rubber coating. Mod podge and flex-bond are both great and you can use layers and wet sand it with sandpaper. Sandpaper will give it a glass smooth surface. For Eva Foam I like flexi-paint. It’s a non-toxic rubber paint and it’s amazing since you can use it indoors.

How do you transport your cosplay to conventions?

Joanna – I use hard-shell suitcases. You don’t want your armor to break in your suitcase and without a good suitcase, it will. I wrap all my armor in bubble wrap to give it an extra layer of protection.

Becka – I try to make my armor in multiple pieces so I can easily break it down and store it in my luggage.

Dhareza – I like to make a big chest piece and store all my other pieces inside of it for protection. A lot of cosplayers will print out a letter to TSA explaining what’s in their bags so it doesn’t get broken and people aren’t alarmed by it.

Sometimes as a beginner it’s hard to know where to start for learning a particular skill set that you’re interested in. What do you recommend as a resource?

NYCC 2017: Cosplayer and model Erica Fett talks bad horror movies, cosplay and her love of all things Star Wars

$

They say in life there nothing is certain but death and taxes. With Comic-Con I think it’s safe to say nothing is certain but cosplay and comics. With over 150,000 people in attendance at New York Comic Con this year, there were cosplayers as far as the eye can see. But there was one cosplayer in particular that I knew I wanted to interview before the weekend was over: Erica Fett!

Erica has been on my radar for some time now. Not only is she a stunningly beautiful model, but she’s also a comic book fan, gamer, cosplayer and huge Star Wars fan. The cosplay gods smiled on me as I was able to catch up with Erica and talk cosplay, horror movies that are so bad that it makes them so good… and of course Star Wars.

AiPT!: Tell us about where you’re from and how you like to spend your time when you aren’t doing photo shoots, creating cosplays or attending conventions.

Erica: A lot of my spare time, when I have it, is spent with my dogs and traveling. I have a lot of e-mail correspondence and since I’m a one person team it takes up a lot of my time. But most of the time I work out, I’m not crazy about it but it’s just one of those things I do because I feel like I have to. [laughs] I much prefer eating pizza and Netflix binging. I watch a lot of anime but there’s still so much I have to catch up on. I’m only on season two of Inuyasha, but I did finish Castlevania, which was amazing.

AiPT!: The mini-series!? It was so good but I was disappointed by how short it was.

Erica: Four episodes! They end it at the best point and ugh it’s so good! I think they’re coming out with another season but I hope it’s more than four episodes this time. It’s beautiful, reminds me of Vampire Hunter D. Beautifully illustrated, Vampire Hunter D is my favorite.

AiPT!: Do you have any rituals you follow when you arrive in a new city for a convention? Whether it be shopping, a good restaurant or sightseeing?

Erica: Usually the first thing I do is always look at food, I definitely like to try a ton of different foods. Secondly I would say shopping is probably pretty big, I like to find out what stores are around us. But most of the time we don’t really have a lot of time for that stuff, so it’s convention, food, pass out [laughs].

AiPT!: I know that you enjoy Netflix and bad horror movies. It’s also one of my favorite past times. What’ve you been enjoying from the depths of Netflix horror section lately? My latest was Beyond the Gates.

Erica: Yes! We just watched Gerald’s Game and Little Evil. Gerald’s Game is a Stephen King movie and it just came out on Netflix, it’s actually not that bad.

AiPT!: I love me some awful Stephen King movies and I don’t know that one. Cat’s Eye and Sleepwalkers is my jam.

Erica: Oh god Tommyknockers! [laughs] They’re so bad, but they’re so good.

AiPT!: In one of your YouTube videos from February of last year, you said you have around 41 tattoos, three coverups and several tattoos that’ve been reworked. I love tattoos as well. I’m curious, what’s your latest project?

Erica: The newest thing that I’m doing is filling in my right arm, my sleeve. The next thing after that is working on my right thigh. I have a Dracula piece that’s half done so I really want to get that finished.

AiPT!: Old school Dracula?

Erica: Keanu Reeves and Gary Oldman Dracula.

AiPT!: Out of all the characters you’ve cosplayed as, which one do you align with the most from a personality standpoint?

Erica: Oh gosh. I’m trying to think of all the things I’ve done. I like Sailor Mars but she’s a little bit sassy and I’m not sassy. Here’s the problem, I always pick characters that are sassy and mean.

AiPT!: Is that something you wish you could be?

Erica: I wish I could be sassy! I always pick sassier and stronger characters because I’ve always been soft spoken. It makes me feel like I’m actual make-beliving. So cosplay for me is making-beliving and getting into a different persona. But yeah I love Sailor Mars, I’m just not as sassy [laughs].

AiPT!: You’ve traveled across the country and the world through modeling, conventions, cosplay and met countless people. What’s the strangest or most surreal situation you’ve found yourself in through your work?

Erica: Umm I still get weird when people recognize me. I feel like a normal person that just dresses up. When people recognize or tell me they like my work I still react with “Oh my god!”. So for me getting recognized is definitely very surreal and makes me feel so blessed that people appreciate what I do.

AiPT!: What would you say was your biggest fan-girl moment?

Erica: I did meet Michael Rooker actually! I was dressed as Poison Ivy and I approached him with “Hey I’m doing a video blog, is there anyway I could get a picture with you?” and he immediately says yes, grabs my phone, grabs me and I’m saying to myself “This is so crazy!” He was just so cool.

AiPT!: He’s got a very unique personality [laughs].

Erica: Yeah! I love it though because there’s nothing worse then when you meet someone and they’re mean. They’re not lively and you’re like “awww man”. You have these expectations for these people and I get it, it’s exhausting to be around people all the time. But yeah meeting him was amazing, he was so far beyond my expectations.

AiPT!: Anyone that hears your name knows that you’re a big Star Wars fan. I know it’s very important to you. There’s a little over two months until The Last Jedi is upon us. Are you theory crafting with your family and friends? Or are you trying to avoid all of that and go into it blind?

Erica: So I’ve heard a lot about these conspiracy theories that Rey and Luke are related somehow and that Rey and Kylo are brother and sister. There’s a theory that I came across saying Han wanted Kylo to kill him as it was the only way to push Kylo to the point where he could be redeemed. So many theories out there [laughs].

After seeing Rogue One I thought it was ok. But I’m going into The Last Jedi thinking this is going to be pretty awesome. Fingers crossed. I feel like it’s going to be good, but I’m waiting to see where they’re taking the story. I just want a good story, it’s all I want.

AiPT!: My friends and I have talked about it a lot. I want that goosebumps feeling.

Erica: Exactly! Being able to feel that and say “OH MY GOD THIS IS AWESOME!”. A lot of people feel that with Star Wars. It brought so many people that feeling. So I’m hoping they deliver [laughs].

AiPT!: I saw that you have something like 80+ Star Wars LEGO sets. I loooooove the new LEGO Snowspeeder, it’s the pride and joy of my collection. I was curious what your favorite is?

Erica: I don’t even own my favorite! I’ve always wanted the LEGO Death Star, but the problem is it’s like $500. Why?! Why do you have to be so expensive LEGO?! But my personal favorite that I own right now is probably my Hoth collection. I basically have an entire Hoth scene; the Wampa, the speeders, tauntaun, everything. I kind of want to do a Christmas thing where I set it out on my mantle and it’s all Hoth. That’s my Christmas village! That’s Hoth!

AiPT!: I’m honest enough with myself to recognize that I’m a total weirdo. It turns out there nearly everyone is! What’s one quirk or habit you have that falls into the weird category that people may not know about?

Erica: I do things in threes. I’m not necessarily OCD, but if I’m making coffee in the morning I’ll do three scoops of sugar. Or if I’m doing shampoo it’s three scoops. Anything it’s always in threes. I dance a lot, I can’t dance though, I have no rhythm.

AiPT!: What’re you most looking forward to this weekend? A panel? A signing? Lightsaber training class?

Erica: So actually this is my last day here so I don’t have a lot of time to be in the convention because I have shoots, interviews and signings. But tomorrow I don’t have tickets to the convention so we’ll walk around the city, do all the cool New York stuff that we don’t get to do in Columbus, Ohio. And get some food! I want some ramen really bad [laughs].

When photographs of Amber Heard as Mera in upcoming DC film Aquaman (2018) first surfaced, the Queen of Atlantis and wife of Aquaman’s appearance was markedly different from that of Snyder’s Justice League:

Heard as Mera in Aquaman:

Most noticeable? The colors: Aquaman-iconic bright green and gold. Snyder’s films have been known for their drab, muted-color aesthetic — so director James Wan’s more vibrant, flashy approach to Aquaman is a welcome shot in the arm. XD He showed me "Warcraft III Reign of Chaos" when I was 9 or 10 years old at it has had a huge influence on me. Since then Night elves became my inspiration. In 13 I even asked my mom take me to the archery lessons. I explored WoW as MMORPG years later, in 19. But I never stopped loving Warcraft. My heart is forever in Azeroth. And today I'm trying to bring my favorite fantasy world in real life through cosplay. Thank you, daddy! #tyrandewhisperwind #tyrande #cosplay #nightelf #cosplayer #tyrandecosplay #worldofwarcraft #wow #owl #fantasy #wow #warcraft #darnassus #elves #elfgirl #elf #alliance #heroesofthestorm #hearthstone #behindthescene #backstage

Cosplayers descend on Rhode Island Comic Con 2017 [Gallery]

For the smallest state in the country, Rhode Island sure managed to pack its Convention Center for the 2017 edition of Rhode Island Comic Con. And while I’m not crazy about massive crowds, moving at a snail’s pace was all the more tolerable because of all the creative cosplayers attending this year’s show. Doctor Doom to my left, Kylo Ren to my right–awesome all around!

Take a look at just a few of the many talented cosplayers I got to see at Rhode Island Comic Con 2017. Oh yes, and if you see yourself in this post, be sure to identify yourself in the comment space below!

Doctor Doom getting a head start on “Infinity War” mania.

Whether you’re Cobra or a G.I. Joe, eyeglasses are A-OK!

This was right after I told Kylo Ren I needed someone to show me my place in all of this.

I’m unable to confirm whether Michael Keaton was under that helmet, so I’m going to assume he was.

Not sure who this was supposed to be, but man was he a grouch!

Not really cosplay, but cool, no? Completely 3-D printed!

Look sir, Droids!

Waiting in line for panels really does a number on you.

Alexstrasza, the Life-Binder and Queen of Dragons from World of Warcraft lore was announced at BlizzCon 2017 as an upcoming playable character in Heroes of the Storm; what perfect timing for Jessica Nigri to unveil this bad-ass, detailed and incredibly accurate costume for the protector of all life on Azeroth:

GUYSSSS!!!! I FINISHED AND DEBUTED MY ALEXSTRAZA AT BLIZZCON TODAY!! I AM SO HAPPY! I started this costume back in September in preparation for a lil secret documentary we are filming and have been working on it on and off till till now! The total creation time was about 3 weeks! HUGE SHOUT OUT TO MY BOY @zachfischerart FOR DESIGNING ME NEW DESIGN TO CRAFT!!! I made everything on the costume minus the gem mold base provided in 3D form from my girl Jill(Shout out to @obsydiann_props for 3d modeling the base of my gems for me which I then 3D printed, molded, resin cast and then added lights)! The rest of the costume is WORBLA, EVA, apoxie sculpt, battery string LEDs, resin, wood glue, mod podge and pink insulation foam! I've been uploading progress on my Patreon (I'm sorry Patreon babies for all the spam hahaha) so if you'd like to check out my creation process you can on there! I AM HAPPY. I FINISHED MY 3RD DRAGON BABY. FUCK YES I AM SO GOD DAMNED PROUD!!!! #blizzcon #jessicanigri #alexstrasza
