Cosplay Roundup – Dragon Con 2016

Another Dragon Con is in the books and it was another outstanding year for cosplay. If you’ve never attended Dragon Con, you might not realize why it’s considered one of the top cons for cosplay – the overwhelming majority of people are in costume. If you wear jeans and a t-shirt, you’ll spend the whole con longing for Stormtrooper armor or a sonic screwdriver. Here is a selection of some of the incredible cosplay I saw over the weekend (and confession: there may be one or two of myself in there).

True to Source

Some folks like to get their costumes as close to the source as possible, and here some examples from Dragon Con that did an outstanding job.

photo-sep-02-9-40-39-pm Star Wars Cantina Band! They had a speaker that played all the different selections from A New Hope and The Force Awakens, and were constantly dancing, so I couldn’t get a non-blurry shot.

ariel This Ariel from “The Little Mermaid” is pitch perfect, she even has her dinglehopper!

sanderson “Hocus Pocus” is a defining movie for most 90’s kids, and I love how amazing these Sanderson sisters look. They brought their master along too!

girl-in-the-fireplace One of my personal favorite episodes of Doctor Who is “The Girl in the Fireplace” from season two. The level of detail on these clockwork men from the episode is incredible.

sanders-stargate When pop culture collides: it’s a meeting of two very different colonels. General Landry and Colonel Carter from Stargate flank Colonel Sanders in his southern chickeny glory.

lego These LEGO Mega Figures are PERFECTION. These guys had a speaker that played various songs from the Ghostbusters soundtrack and people could not wait to get pictures with them.

stranger-things Cosplay is a solid reason to have kids, right? These parents had all the details down on their tiny Eleven from “Stranger Things”, including a real piece of Eggo waffle that she was happy to gnaw on.

Interpretations

Other folks like to take canon and give it an interesting twist. I am always blown away by the things cosplayers at Dragon Con come up with!

uhura This Uhura is SLAYING styled as a Diana Ross era evening look.

civil-war I will never come up with a better cosplay pun than Civil War: Civil War. My bestie and I had way too much fun coming up with all the details to make these as period-accurate as possible while still having fun with the characters.

victorian-star-wars One of Dragon Con’s most popular tracks is Alt History, so there are a lot of folks doing different period looks for characters. I love these incredible Star Wars looks.

gladiators Captain America as an American Gladiator. Makes total sense! Plus the weapon is perfect for warding off the crowds in the Marriott.

elphaba I’m in awe of folks who can do makeup, and this Victorian Wicked Witch of the West looked flawless, as well as having an incredible dress.

marriottcarpet And finally, what is a con without a massive inside joke? Dragon Con is unusual in that it’s held in 6 host hotels across a few blocks of downtown Atlanta, one of which is the Marriott Marquis. A few years ago, Volpin Props had the excellent idea to have a vector image made of the infamously loud carpet in the Marriott’s lobby. They decided to then load the image as a custom fabric on Spoonflower, but after only a couple of days for sale, they were hit with a cease and desist from the makers of the carpet. What happens when you tell someone not to do something? Volpin released the image for free and the Cult of the Marriott Carpet was born. People have made the carpet pattern into everything, including a custom car wrap. I was lucky enough to get a few yards of the fabric in the original sale, and my best friend and I decided that stewardess outfits would be funny. Sadly, after last year’s con, the Marriott replaced all of the now-infamous carpet, but it lives on in cosplay.
